WHAT CAUSES SCARS?
Fibrous tissue as known as scar tissue forms over the wound to repair and protect the injury. In some cases, scar tissue may grow excessively in response to the injury, resulting in keloids or hypertrophic scars.
There are different types of scars
Normal fine-line scars- minor and usually heal and leave a raised line
Fine-line scars are common after surgery or a wound. They are usually not painful, but they may be itchy for a few months.
Keloid scars are an overgrowth of tissue that happens when too much collagen is produced at the site of a wound. They are usually raised above the skin and can be pink, red, the same colour or darker than surrounding skin. Itch or pain can happen, and can restrict movement if they’re tight and near a joint.
Hypertrophic scars are the result of excess collagen being produced at the site of a wound. They do not extend beyond the boundary of the original wound but may continue to thicken for up to 6 months before gradually improving over a few years.
Pitted or sunken scars are caused by skin conditions.
