WHAT CAUSES ACNE?
Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It causes whiteheads, blackheads or pimples. Acne affects people of all ages but is more common among teenagers. Acne usually appears on the face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders. The 4 main causes of acne are excess oil (sebum) production, Hair follicles clogged by oil or dead skin cells, Bacteria and Inflammation.
Hormonal changes can trigger acne too. Androgens are hormones that increase in boys and girls during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum. Hormone changes during midlife, especially in women, can lead to breakouts too. Some medications include drugs containing corticosteroids, testosterone or lithium.
Diet plays a part in triggering acne too. Food that includes carbohydrate-rich foods, such as bread may worsen acne.
Stress plays a big part in causing acne to get worse.
